Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund

XLE is the simplest way to buy the energy sector of the US stock market in a single ticker. State Street launched it in 1998 as one of the original Select Sector SPDR funds, each of which carves the S&P 500 into one industry. This one holds the index's energy names, a group led by ExxonMobil and Chevron, so the fund leans heavily on a couple of oil majors rather than spreading evenly across its holdings. Because those companies rise and fall with crude and natural gas prices, XLE trades as a bet on oil without the mechanics of a futures contract, and it has long paid a healthy dividend out of the sector's cash flows. Investors reach for it to add energy exposure, hedge inflation, or rotate into the sector when commodity prices turn.
