iShares Silver Trust

SLV offers the simplest way to own silver without taking delivery of the metal. Launched in 2006 by BlackRock's iShares, it is a trust that holds physical silver bars, mostly in London vaults, and issues shares that each represent a fractional claim on that hoard, so the fund's price closely tracks the spot price of silver minus a small fee. It spared investors the trouble and cost of buying, storing and insuring bullion, and it quickly became the largest and most liquid way to trade silver in a brokerage account. Because silver is both a precious metal and an industrial input, SLV appeals to two very different crowds: those hedging against inflation and currency risk, and those betting on industrial and solar demand. It is more volatile than a gold fund, since silver's smaller, thinner market swings harder, and it periodically becomes a target for retail traders looking to squeeze the metal's price.
