Among the oldest chip funds on the market, SOXX has tracked the U.S. semiconductor sector since 2001. BlackRock's iShares fund follows the ICE Semiconductor Index, holding roughly 30 of the largest American-listed companies that design and manufacture chips and the equipment used to make them. It competes directly with VanEck's SMH, differing mainly in how many names it holds and how the weights are capped, which keeps any one stock from dominating quite as heavily. Investors buy it as a one-ticket play on demand for computing power, from AI accelerators and data centers to phones, cars and industrial gear. Because chipmakers are cyclical and capital-intensive, the fund tends to move in large swings tied to the boom-and-bust rhythm of the industry. Its long track record and deep liquidity have made it a staple for both long-term tech allocations and active trading.
