To take a position on Brazil in a single fund, investors reach for EWZ. Issued by BlackRock's iShares and trading since 2000, it tracks a capped index of large and mid-sized Brazilian companies, which means heavy weightings in the commodity exporters and banks that dominate the market, from the oil giant Petrobras and the miner Vale to the country's big lenders. That composition makes the fund a leveraged play on commodity prices and on the health of emerging markets, since Brazil's fortunes rise and fall with demand for iron ore, oil and soybeans, much of it from China. It is also a bet on Brazilian politics and the real, the local currency, both of which can swing hard and drive big moves in the fund regardless of what individual companies do.
