Nearly every investable stock outside the United States sits in this Vanguard fund, one of the broadest international products available. VXUS tracks the FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index, holding more than 8,000 companies across developed and emerging markets, large caps down to small caps, all weighted by market value. That sweep means a single share buys Europe, Japan, China, India, Canada, and dozens of smaller markets at once. It is designed as the international half of a two-fund portfolio, pairing with a US total-market fund to cover the entire global equity market. The main risks are currency swings and the political and economic uncertainty of emerging markets, which a US-only investor avoids. Vanguard launched VXUS in 2011, and its 0.05% expense ratio makes worldwide diversification almost free, which is why it anchors so many passive portfolios.
