Union Pacific Corporation

Chartered by Congress in 1862 to build part of the first transcontinental railroad, Union Pacific still runs the largest rail network in the United States, covering the western two-thirds of the country. It is a freight hauler, moving the unglamorous but essential cargo of the economy: grain, coal, chemicals, cars and the stacked containers of imported goods known as intermodal. Railroads are a classic oligopoly with high barriers to entry, and Union Pacific competes mainly with BNSF out West, which gives it pricing power and fat operating margins. In 2025 it agreed to buy Norfolk Southern in a deal that would create the first true coast-to-coast US railroad, though regulators must still approve it. Based in Omaha, Nebraska, the company is a favorite of investors who prize steady cash flow and reliable dividends.
