Europe's largest chipmaker, STMicroelectronics, came out of a 1987 merger between Italy's SGS Microelettronica and France's Thomson Semiconducteurs, and it still counts the French and Italian states among its anchor shareholders. The company designs and manufactures a broad catalog of chips: microcontrollers, power and analog devices, and the sensors that end up in cars, factories, phones and appliances. Its STM32 microcontroller family is one of the most widely used in the industry.

Unlike fabless designers, ST owns its factories, which gives it control over supply but also heavy fixed costs that swing its margins with demand. Automotive and industrial customers drive much of the business, so its results track those cycles closely. It is incorporated in the Netherlands and run from Geneva, Switzerland.
