When traders expect the broad U.S. stock market to fall, SPXU aims to return negative three times the daily move of the S&P 500. If the index drops 1% on a given day, the fund is designed to rise about 3%, and vice versa. ProShares resets that exposure every session using swaps and futures, which is the crucial detail: the -3x target holds for a single day only. Over longer stretches the daily compounding pulls returns away from simply tripling the index's decline, and in choppy, directionless markets that drift bleeds value.
