About Vanguard Real Estate ETF
Real estate gets its own low-cost index fund in VNQ, Vanguard's flagship way to own US property through the stock market. The fund holds real estate investment trusts, the companies that own and operate apartments, offices, malls, warehouses, data centers and cell towers, tracking the MSCI US Investable Market Real Estate 25/50 Index. REITs must pay out most of their taxable income as dividends, which is why the fund yields more than the broad market and appeals to income-focused investors. Weighting is by market value with caps that keep any single name from dominating. Because property values react to interest rates and rents, the fund can behave differently from the rest of the equity market, making it a diversifier as much as an income play. Vanguard's rock-bottom expense ratio, in place since the 2004 launch, is a large part of its appeal.
