BlackRock runs BAI as a hand-picked bet on artificial intelligence rather than a rules-based index. Its managers use fundamental research to build a portfolio of global AI and technology companies across all sizes, from the chipmakers and cloud platforms that supply the computing power to the software firms trying to turn the technology into products. Because it is actively managed, the fund can concentrate in the names its analysts find most convincing and move as the theme shifts, something a fixed index cannot do. That flexibility cuts both ways: performance depends on the team's stock picking, not just the direction of the AI trade. BlackRock launched it in October 2024, part of a push to bring active thematic strategies into the low-cost ETF wrapper.
