Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF

Emerging-market equities in one cheap wrapper is the whole idea behind VWO. It tracks a FTSE index of stocks from developing economies, thousands of companies spanning China, India, Taiwan, Brazil and dozens of other markets, weighted by market value and including mainland Chinese A-shares. Vanguard runs it at a fraction of the cost of active emerging-market funds, and its sheer breadth makes it one of the standard ways US investors get this exposure. The pitch is diversification and growth: developing economies carry faster growth and younger populations, though also currency swings, weaker governance and political risk that make the ride bumpier than developed markets. China's large weighting ties the fund's fortunes closely to that one economy. It sits in many portfolios as the emerging-markets slice of a global allocation.
