Palladium, the metal that scrubs pollution from gasoline engine exhaust, sits at the center of this fund. Rather than futures, PALL holds physical palladium bullion in secured vaults, with each share representing a fixed, slowly shrinking claim on real metal, so its price tracks spot palladium closely minus a modest fee. The trust was formed in late 2009 and began trading in early 2010 as an ETF Securities product; abrdn, the Scottish asset manager, took it over in 2018 and now sponsors it. Demand for palladium is tied heavily to the auto industry, especially catalytic converters, which makes the metal, and this fund, sensitive to car sales and to the slow shift toward electric vehicles that use none of it. Investors use PALL to speculate on that supply story or to diversify a precious-metals holding beyond gold and silver.
