Ouster

Lidar sensors give machines a 3D map of the world by bouncing laser pulses off their surroundings and timing the return. Ouster builds digital lidar, putting the guts on a custom chip rather than using bulky analog optics, which it argues lowers cost and improves reliability. Its sensors show up in robots, industrial automation, mapping vehicles, drones, smart infrastructure and defense systems more than in passenger cars, where full self-driving has arrived slower than promised. Founded in 2015 and based in San Francisco, Ouster merged with rival Velodyne in early 2023, combining two of the best-known lidar names into a single company with a broad customer base. The business still runs at a loss, so the story is about growing sensor shipments and reaching scale.
