Planet Labs

A fleet of small satellites photographs the entire land surface of the Earth every day, and running that fleet is Planet Labs' business. Its shoebox-sized Dove satellites capture a broad, medium-resolution daily scan, while a smaller set of SkySat craft take sharper images on demand. Founded in 2010 by former NASA engineers and based in San Francisco, Planet turns those pictures into a subscription data service, selling imagery and analytics to agriculture, mapping companies, governments, defense and finance customers who want to track change over time. The company went public through a SPAC in 2021. The challenge is turning a novel dataset into steady, high-value contracts, especially larger government and defense deals, since building and launching satellites is costly and much of the imagery is a recurring commodity. Growth hinges on selling analysis, not just pixels.
