When a company like Nvidia, Cisco or Coherent needs someone to assemble intricate optical and photonic hardware, it often hands the job to Fabrinet. The contract manufacturer specializes in low-volume, high-complexity work: the fiber-optic transceivers, laser modules and optical components that go into data centers, telecom networks, industrial lasers and medical devices.

Tom Mitchell, a Seagate co-founder, started Fabrinet in 2000 and took over a former Seagate plant in Thailand, where most of its factories still sit. The company is incorporated in the Cayman Islands but run out of Pathumthani, near Bangkok. Its fortunes are tied to the optical networking cycle, and lately to the surge in high-speed transceivers that AI data centers consume, which has made it a quiet beneficiary of the buildout even though few outside the industry know its name.
