When the power goes out, Generac is the name most Americans associate with backup generators. The company is the dominant maker of home standby and portable generators in North America, and it also builds larger commercial and industrial systems, with output ranging from a few hundred watts to several megawatts. It sells through a broad network of dealers, retailers and wholesalers.

Founded in 1959 and based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Generac has pushed beyond generators into a wider energy business, adding home batteries, solar equipment and grid-services software as it positions itself around a less reliable electrical grid. Its sales are driven partly by weather: hurricanes, wildfires and grid failures spur bursts of demand, which makes the business lumpy but gives it a powerful long-term tailwind as outages grow more common.
