Methode Electronics

Founded in 1946 on Chicago's south side, Methode Electronics grew from a small maker of electrical parts into a supplier of switches, sensors, connectors and lighting for vehicles. Cars are its center of gravity: the company builds the user-interface controls, sensing devices and power-distribution parts that go into dashboards and electrical systems, which ties its fortunes to auto production volumes and to individual model programs it has been designed into. That project-based auto exposure cuts both ways, delivering steady content on winning platforms but hurting results when a key program ends or a customer's sales slip, as recent stumbles have shown. It also serves industrial, aerospace and medical markets to broaden the base. After roughly eighty years headquartered in Chicago, Methode moved its base to Southfield, Michigan, closer to the Detroit customers that define its business.
