Powell Industries

Powell Industries builds the switchgear and packaged electrical systems that route and control power inside large industrial plants. Its equipment sits in the substations and electrical rooms of oil refineries, petrochemical complexes, LNG terminals and utilities, monitoring and distributing medium- and low-voltage power where a failure is expensive or dangerous. Founded in Houston in 1947, the company still runs from there, close to the Gulf Coast energy customers that drive much of its order book. Powell tends to win large, custom projects rather than sell off-the-shelf boxes, so its revenue moves with capital spending on new plants and with the multi-year backlog it carries. The recent boom in LNG export and data-center construction has lifted demand, and because each system is engineered to a specific site, the business leans on long lead times and repeat relationships.
