A constellation of small satellites the size of a wine bottle is how Spire Global collects data most companies could never gather on their own. Founded in 2012, the firm operates more than a hundred nanosatellites that listen for signals from ships and aircraft and measure the atmosphere, then sells the resulting data as a subscription. Three data sets anchor the business: maritime tracking that follows vessels at sea and flags illegal fishing, aviation tracking that covers aircraft over oceans where ground radar cannot reach, and weather readings drawn from how satellite signals bend through the atmosphere, which national forecasters buy to sharpen their models. Building and launching the network is capital-intensive, but once satellites are in orbit the data can be sold many times over. Spire's challenge has been turning that recurring-revenue promise into consistent profit.
