Satellogic Inc.

From a standing start in Buenos Aires, Satellogic set out to photograph the entire planet at high resolution, cheaply and often. Founded in 2010 by Emiliano Kargieman and Gerardo Richarte, it designs and builds its own small Earth-observation satellites rather than buying them, and assembles them at a facility in Montevideo, Uruguay. The idea is to drive the cost per image down far enough to remap the whole Earth on a regular cadence, selling the imagery and analysis to governments, agriculture, mining and mapping customers.

The company reached the public markets through a 2022 SPAC merger. Its constellation has grown past fifty satellites, but the business is still small and unprofitable, competing against better-funded imaging rivals like Planet Labs. The bet is that owning cheap, vertically integrated manufacturing lets it undercut everyone else on price once the constellation is large enough.
