Aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines are effectively a two-supplier business in the United States, and Huntington Ingalls is one of them. Its Newport News yard in Virginia is the only one that builds the Navy's nuclear-powered carriers and, with General Dynamics, shares the submarine programs; its Ingalls yard in Pascagoula, Mississippi builds destroyers and amphibious ships. Spun out of Northrop Grumman in 2011, HII is the largest military shipbuilder in the country, which gives it enormous, decades-long programs but also concentrated exposure to a single customer and to the labor and supply headaches that dog complex shipbuilding. A growing services arm handles unmanned systems, and defense IT diversifies the mix. The moat is physical: replicating these shipyards and their skilled workforce would take a rival many years.
