From a failing textile mill, Warren Buffett built Berkshire Hathaway into one of the largest companies in the world, and it works unlike any other. At its core is insurance, GEICO and a set of reinsurers, whose premiums give Berkshire a vast pool of float to invest before claims are paid. On top of that sits a collection of wholly owned businesses, from the BNSF railroad and a large utility group to See's Candies, Dairy Queen and dozens more, plus a stock portfolio long dominated by a huge Apple stake. The result is a decentralized conglomerate that throws off cash Buffett and his team redeploy. Berkshire famously hoards tens of billions in cash, waiting for bargains, and pays no dividend. With Buffett having handed the chief executive role to Greg Abel, the central question is how it fares in the era after its founder. It is based in Omaha, Nebraska.
