Mastercard does not lend money or issue cards; it runs the rails that move money between the banks that do. Every time someone taps a Mastercard-branded card, the network sits in the middle, authorizing the transaction and routing it between the shopper's bank and the merchant's, and it takes a small fee for the service. That toll-booth model, shared with rival Visa, is one of the most profitable in finance: costs barely rise as volume grows, so margins are enormous and cash flow is steady. Founded in 1966 as a bank cooperative and public since 2006, Mastercard is based in Purchase, New York. Its growth story rides the long shift from cash to cards and digital payments across the world, plus newer lines in fraud prevention, data services and account-to-account transfers. It carries no consumer credit risk of its own.
