Started in 2011 to refinance student loans for Stanford graduates, SoFi has grown into one of the largest digital-only banks in the United States, with roughly fifteen million customers. It has no branches; members join through an app that bundles lending, checking and savings, investing, and a credit card, and the company pushes them to hold several products at once. A turning point came in 2022, when SoFi obtained a national bank charter, letting it fund loans with cheaper customer deposits instead of relying on capital markets and improving its margins. It also runs Galileo, a behind-the-scenes technology platform that powers cards and accounts for other fintechs. The strategy is to grow deposits and cross-sell across a single relationship, and after years of losses the company has recently turned profitable, which is what the stock now hinges on.
