Revenue comes mainly from transaction fees, a small cut of the payment volume flowing across its network. The business grew quickly during the shift to e-commerce, but competition has intensified from Apple Pay, bank-backed services, and buy-now-pay-later rivals, and PayPal's take rate has been under pressure. The debate for investors is whether it can turn its large base of active accounts into higher engagement and profit per user rather than simply defending share in a crowded checkout market.
