Founded in 1985 as a two-man advisory shop by Stephen Schwarzman and Peter Peterson, Blackstone has become the largest alternative-asset manager in the world, overseeing more than a trillion dollars. It invests other people's money, mostly from pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and wealthy individuals, across private equity, real estate, credit, and hedge-fund strategies. Its real estate arm alone is one of the biggest property owners on the planet. The economics are the draw: Blackstone earns steady management fees on committed capital plus a cut of the profits when investments pay off, a mix that scales without the balance-sheet risk of a traditional bank. That said, results and the stock swing with markets, since fundraising slows and asset sales dry up when rates rise and deals stall. The firm is headquartered in New York City.
