AST SpaceMobile is chasing an audacious goal: to beam a mobile signal directly from satellites to an ordinary, unmodified smartphone. Most satellite phones need special hardware, but AST is building a constellation of very large satellites designed to act like cell towers in space, connecting standard phones in places no ground network reaches. It proved the concept with a prototype that placed the first space-based call to a regular handset, and it has begun launching its commercial BlueBird satellites, some of the biggest commercial arrays ever put in low Earth orbit. Founded in 2017 and based in Midland, Texas, the company went public through a SPAC in 2021 and has struck deals with major wireless carriers. It is a pre-revenue, binary bet: if the constellation works and scales, the market is enormous, but the technical and financial risks of building it are just as large.
