Ciena makes the high-capacity gear that carries data across the internet's long-haul backbone. As AI and cloud computing push ever more data between data centers, demand for that kind of bandwidth has grown, giving Ciena a steady tailwind. Founded in 1992 and based in Hanover, Maryland, the company also sells the software used to run and automate networks. Because it depends on the capital-spending cycles of a relatively small number of large customers, its revenue can be lumpy, and a big carrier delaying or accelerating orders moves the results. The stock is a bet on the relentless growth of internet traffic and on the buildout of the connections between AI data centers.
