Comcast makes most of its money selling broadband internet and cable television to American homes under the Xfinity brand, a business that throws off enormous cash but is now losing subscribers as wireless and fiber rivals chip away at it. Layered on top is a sprawling media arm, NBCUniversal, which owns the NBC network, Universal Pictures, the Peacock streaming service and a growing collection of theme parks, plus Sky, the European pay-TV group Comcast bought in 2018. Started in 1963 by Ralph Roberts as a small cable system and still run by his son Brian, the Philadelphia company grew into one of the largest media and communications firms in the world through relentless acquisition. Investors weigh its steady broadband profits against the slow decline of cable TV and the cost of competing in streaming and parks.
