About Baidu
Baidu runs China's dominant internet search engine, and for years online advertising against those search results was essentially the whole company. That core still funds everything else, but growth has shifted to newer bets: an AI cloud business, the Ernie family of large language models it positions as China's answer to ChatGPT, and Apollo Go, one of the country's largest robotaxi fleets, now carrying paying passengers in several cities. Founded in Beijing in 2000 by Robin Li, Baidu holds a position in Chinese search comparable to Google's in the West, partly because Google withdrew from the mainland. The investment case rests on whether its autonomous-driving and AI efforts can offset an advertising business exposed to China's uneven economy and the tighter regulation that shapes every large Chinese technology firm.
