AbbVie spent its first decade defined by a single drug: Humira, an anti-inflammatory that became the best-selling medicine in history and once supplied most of the company's revenue. When Humira lost US patent protection in 2023 and cheaper copies arrived, the whole investment question became whether its replacements could fill the hole. So far they have, with two newer immunology drugs, Skyrizi and Rinvoq, growing fast enough to more than offset the decline. The 2020 purchase of Allergan added Botox and an aesthetics franchise that diversified the business beyond immunology into neuroscience and eye care. Spun out of Abbott Laboratories in 2013 and based in North Chicago, Illinois, AbbVie carries heavy debt from its deals but throws off enough cash to fund a large, closely watched dividend.
