Almost every research lab, hospital and drug company buys something from Thermo Fisher Scientific. It sells the picks and shovels of life science: lab instruments, reagents, plastics, diagnostics and, increasingly, contract manufacturing for drugmakers. The company was formed in 2006 by the merger of Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific and has grown mainly by acquisition, absorbing names like Life Technologies and PPD to build one of the broadest catalogs in the industry. A large slice of revenue is recurring consumables that customers reorder constantly, which gives the business steady cash flow and pricing power. The stock is often treated as a bet on the health of pharma and biotech research spending; it boomed during the pandemic on COVID testing demand and then had to grow past that bulge. Headquarters are in Waltham, Massachusetts.
