Keytruda, a cancer immunotherapy that helps the immune system attack tumors, has become the best-selling drug in the world and now drives much of Merck's profit. That concentration is the company's blessing and its risk, because Keytruda loses key US patent protection around 2028 and Merck is racing to replace the revenue with new oncology drugs, vaccines like Gardasil, and its large animal-health unit. Known as Merck & Co in the United States and Canada but as MSD everywhere else, to avoid confusion with the separate German firm of the same name, it is one of the oldest names in pharmaceuticals. The stock tends to trade on pipeline news and the market's read on how well the company can survive the coming Keytruda cliff. Headquarters are in Rahway, New Jersey.
