One of the oldest drugmakers in the world, Pfizer traces its roots to 1849 in New York, where it remains headquartered. Its catalog spans vaccines, cardiology, oncology and rare disease, with franchises like the pneumococcal vaccine Prevnar, the blood thinner Eliquis and a growing cancer portfolio expanded by the 2023 purchase of Seagen. The pandemic briefly made it enormous: the Comirnaty vaccine, developed with BioNTech, and the antiviral Paxlovid together brought in record revenue that has since receded. Pfizer's recurring challenge is the patent cliff, the point at which blockbuster drugs lose exclusivity and cheaper generics erode sales, forcing constant reinvestment and dealmaking to refill the pipeline. Management has leaned on acquisitions and cost cuts to steady the business as COVID income fades and older drugs age out.
