About Verizon
Formed in 2000 from the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE, Verizon is the largest wireless carrier in the United States, with roughly 145 million connections on its network. The core business is simple and durable: charge tens of millions of people a monthly bill for mobile service, a habit few give up even in a downturn. That produces the reliable cash flow behind one of the biggest dividends in the market, which is the main reason most investors own the stock. Verizon also sells Fios fiber-optic home internet in the Northeast and has spent tens of billions of dollars on 5G spectrum to keep its network competitive. Growth is scarce in a saturated market where it, AT&T and T-Mobile mostly poach each other's customers, so the story is about defending subscribers and paying down the debt from those spectrum purchases.
