Sixty-six cross-linked satellites in low orbit give Iridium something rivals lack: voice and data coverage over the entire planet, poles included, not just the populated latitudes most networks serve. Because the satellites talk to each other in space, a signal can reach a ground station without a nearby antenna, which is why the network underpins maritime, aviation, military and remote-industry communications. The system is the reborn version of the 1990s Iridium venture that went bankrupt after building the constellation; the assets were bought cheaply, and the current company, based in McLean, Virginia, turned them into a profitable subscription business. Growth now leans on machine-to-machine and IoT connections, low-cost devices that phone home from ships, pipelines and sensors. A US government contract remains a steady, long-running anchor customer.
