About ProShares Short S&P500
As a hedge against a falling US market, SH is one of the most widely used tools. The fund seeks the inverse of the S&P 500's daily return, so it rises roughly one percent when the index drops one percent, letting investors offset a stock portfolio without shorting or selling their holdings. ProShares launched it in 2006, and it became a standard building block for tactical hedging. The important caveat is the daily reset: SH is engineered to track the index inversely for a single day, and over longer periods compounding causes its return to drift from a simple mirror of the S&P 500, usually to the holder's disadvantage in volatile markets. It works best as a short-term hedge or a bet on a near-term decline, not as a long-run way to profit from a market that mostly rises over time.
