About Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust
Platinum and palladium, held as physical bullion, are what SPPP owns. Sprott runs it as a closed-end trust that stores the two metals in allocated form at the Royal Canadian Mint, and unlike most funds its holders can, in large enough blocks, redeem shares for the actual metal. Both metals are tied heavily to autos, where they scrub emissions in catalytic converters, so the fund's fortunes track vehicle demand, mining supply out of South Africa and Russia, and the slow shift toward electric cars that use neither. It gives investors a single vehicle for two precious metals that are harder to buy directly than gold or silver. Buyers are usually those making a bet on the platinum-group metals cycle or seeking diversification beyond the more common precious metals, and are comfortable with the thin, volatile markets these two trade in.
