It designs the Snapdragon chips that power a large share of the world's Android smartphones, handling everything from the modem to the processor, and it collects licensing royalties on the fundamental patents behind modern cellular standards like 4G and 5G, a high-margin business that taxes nearly every phone sold regardless of whose chips are inside. Founded in 1985 and based in San Diego, Qualcomm has spent years trying to reduce its reliance on a maturing smartphone market by pushing its chips into cars, PCs and connected devices, and lately into on-device AI. The stock is shaped by handset demand, its always-contentious patent-licensing disputes, and its progress diversifying beyond phones. Any shift in its relationship with a giant customer like Apple can move it sharply.
