Western Digital, which most people know simply as WD, makes the drives that store the world's data. It is one of the largest producers of hard disk drives on the planet, the high-capacity spinning disks that fill data centers and back up the cloud, and it has long sat in a near-duopoly with Seagate at the top of that market. The business swings with a brutal cycle: when memory and drive prices climb, profits surge, and when a glut hits, they evaporate. Founded in 1970 and based in San Jose, the company recently split off its flash-memory arm as a separate business, leaving WD more concentrated on hard drives than it had been in years. Demand from AI data centers, which need somewhere cheap to park enormous datasets, has become a fresh tailwind for the disk business.
