Small companies that want to raise money from ordinary investors, not just venture funds, are Netcapital's customers. The Boston firm runs an online platform for equity crowdfunding: through its registered funding portal it has helped more than 300 startups sell shares to the public under Regulation Crowdfunding since 2016, and it has since added the ability to run larger Regulation A+ and Regulation D raises through a broker-dealer arm. A separate advisory unit helps issuers structure deals, handle compliance and market their campaigns. Netcapital makes money on fees and, at times, by taking equity in the companies it lists, which ties part of its fortunes to how those young businesses perform. It is a small-cap stock, and its share count and capital needs are worth watching closely.
