Prospect Capital Corporation

Prospect Capital has been lending to mid-sized private companies since 2004, making it one of the older and larger business development companies on the market. Run by Prospect Capital Management from New York, it puts money to work mainly in first- and second-lien senior secured loans, often with an equity stake alongside, and it finances buyouts, recapitalizations and growth for middle-market borrowers and their private-equity backers. Its book is spread across many industries and it has also moved into areas like multifamily real estate. As a BDC it exists to pay income, and it has long carried one of the higher headline yields in the group. That yield has also drawn scrutiny: skeptics question its valuations and dividend coverage, which makes the durability of the payout the central debate around the stock.
