About Synchrony Financial

Behind many store-branded credit cards in America sits Synchrony, even though most shoppers never see its name. The company is the largest issuer of private-label and co-branded cards in the country, partnering with retailers and with providers in areas like home improvement, health and pet care to offer financing at the point of sale. Spun off from General Electric in 2014 and now an independent consumer finance company, it funds those cards largely through deposits gathered by its online Synchrony Bank. Its earnings turn on two things: how much cardholders borrow and how reliably they repay, so credit losses rise when the economy weakens and consumers fall behind. It also shares the interest income with its retail partners under negotiated deals. The stock is a fairly direct read on the health of the American consumer and the cost of credit.
