New Mountain Finance lends to companies in what its manager calls defensive-growth industries, the sectors it judges least likely to be upended by recessions or technological change, such as software, business services and healthcare. It is a business development company advised by New Mountain Capital, a private-equity and credit firm managing tens of billions of dollars, and it draws on that parent's sector research to pick borrowers. The portfolio is mostly senior secured loans to upper-middle-market companies backed by private-equity sponsors, with some junior capital mixed in for extra yield. As a BDC it distributes almost all its income, so the dividend is the point, and its results depend on keeping credit losses low across a book concentrated in industries it believes hold up in bad times.
