California's Mountain Pass mine is the only operating rare earth mine and processing site in the United States, and MP Materials owns it. The company pulls rare earth concentrate from the ground there and increasingly refines it into separated oxides and the neodymium-praseodymium used in high-strength permanent magnets. Those magnets go into electric-vehicle motors, wind turbines, drones and defense hardware, which is why Washington treats domestic supply as a strategic priority. MP was formed in 2017 out of the bankruptcy of Molycorp, the mine's previous owner, and went public through a SPAC deal in 2020. Its bet is vertical integration: mine, refine, and eventually manufacture finished magnets on US soil, breaking a supply chain that runs almost entirely through China. Recent agreements with the Pentagon and Apple pushed the stock sharply higher.
