The company mines and processes lithium into the compounds battery makers need, and it runs two other specialty-chemical lines: bromine, used in flame retardants and drilling, and catalysts for refining. That mix matters because lithium prices swing violently, and the steadier bromine and catalyst businesses cushion the ride when battery-material prices crash. Formed in 1994 as a spin-off from Ethyl Corporation and based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Albemarle is effectively a way to invest in the electric-vehicle build-out without owning a carmaker. Its fortunes rise and fall with the lithium cycle, which has meant boom years followed by brutal downturns, and the stock tends to move with expectations for future battery demand.
