Southern Copper

Few miners pull copper from the ground as cheaply as Southern Copper, one of the largest and lowest-cost producers of the metal in the world. It digs copper, along with by-products of molybdenum, silver and zinc, from open-pit mines in Peru and Mexico, and sits on some of the biggest copper reserves of any listed miner. Low costs and long reserve life let it stay profitable even when prices fall, and it has become a favored way to bet on copper demand from electrification and construction. The catch is concentration and politics: its fortunes ride on the copper price, and its mines have faced community protests and permitting fights, especially in Peru. Grupo Mexico controls the company, which limits the free float. It is organized in Delaware and run from Phoenix, Arizona, with its operations rooted in Latin America.
