Before Amazon dominated online shopping, eBay taught people to buy from strangers on the internet through its auctions. Today it runs a marketplace that connects buyers and sellers directly and takes a cut of each sale, without holding inventory or shipping goods itself, an asset-light model that generates strong cash flow. Over the years it shed the businesses that once inflated it, spinning off PayPal in 2015 and selling its classifieds and StubHub units, leaving a more focused marketplace. Growth is slow, so management has leaned on categories like collectibles, luxury watches, refurbished electronics and auto parts, where authentication and enthusiast buyers command better economics than commodity goods. It returns a lot of cash to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. Founded in 1995 and based in San Jose, California, eBay is now a mature cash machine rather than a growth story.
