Often called the Amazon of Latin America, MercadoLibre runs the region's biggest online marketplace across Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and beyond. The more interesting engine, though, is fintech: Mercado Pago began as a way to pay safely on the marketplace and grew into a full digital-payments and lending arm that now serves millions of people with little access to traditional banks. Around this sit a logistics network, Mercado Envios, and a fast-growing credit book. Selling into economies with high inflation and volatile currencies is the constant challenge, and it shows up in the numbers. Of Argentine origin, the company is headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay and was founded in 1999, and it has spent the past decade compounding revenue while fending off Amazon and Sea Limited's Shopee across its home markets.
