After a chip is fabricated, it still needs to be packaged into something a circuit board can use and tested to confirm it works, and Amkor Technology is one of the largest independent providers of that service. Founded in 1968 and headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, with much of its manufacturing across Asia, Amkor sits in the OSAT niche alongside Taiwan's ASE. Its customers are the chip designers and device makers who prefer to outsource assembly rather than run their own back-end plants. Advanced packaging, the art of combining several dies and stacking memory for automotive, mobile and high-performance computing chips, has become a bigger part of the mix as traditional transistor scaling slows. The business is cyclical and capital-hungry, rising and falling with semiconductor demand and the pace of new packaging technology.
